Project updates
Add small TUI. Run RingLogger.viewer and type h for help to try it out. Thanks to @doawoo for this feature.
This update pulls in Buildroot 2023.08.2. This is a major Buildroot update from v1.24.1 with possibly the biggest change for Nerves users being the update from OpenSSL 1.1.1 to OpenSSL 3.
Nerves systems need the following updates:
- Buildroot 2023.08 updated the default GCC version to GCC 13. Since Nerves systems and toolchains are mostly on GCC 12 which was the default, the nerves_defconfig will need to be updated to select GCC 12. Add BR2_TOOLCHAIN_EXTERNAL_GCC_12=y to nerves_defconfig.
- Buildroot’s toolchain feature detection is better. OpenMP and Fortran support are autodetect and checked against toolchain features specified in nerves_defconfig. To fix the warnings, add BR2_TOOLCHAIN_EXTERNAL_FORTRAN=y and BR2_TOOLCHAIN_EXTERNAL_OPENMP=y to nerves_defconfig.
- If using a RISC-V processor, you may need to enable the atomic instructions in the target selection. If you get build errors with Erlang concerning atomics, this is likely the issue.
- Package updates
Add Circuits.I2C.bus() type back to fix a dialyzer warning on projects that support both Circuits.I2C 1.0 and 2.0.

NervesConf is returning!
Todd Resudek has announced that NervesConf will return and happen in connection with Gig City Elixir on the 9th of May in year of 2024. Quite exciting!
Code BEAM Europe in Berlin is done and dusted
Look forward to the talks as they come out The Tamagotchi in my Hands: Anarcho-transhumanist Biohacking with Nerves by Quinn Wilton is a great wild romp through hardware hacking.
I missed this but apparently Prototyping a Remote-Controlled Telescope with Elixir by Lucas Sifoni was also really good.
I don't know when the videos go public from the event unfortunately.

Supporting the Nerves project
We want to encourage everyone to contribute in whatever way works for them. Here are some ways we currently recommend:
- Write or port a new hardware library and include it in the Elixir Circuits collection.
- Give money to the project via Open Collective.
- Get in touch about taking over maintenance duties for some libraries, we might be able to provide you hardware.
- Apply for an EEF stipend on something Nerves-related and build it. We can help if you have questions about this.
- Send corrections or improvements for documentation wherever it fails to help you.
- Write about Nerves, give talks about Nerves. Make videos about Nerves. It is all good.
